The Power of Local Purchasing at Independent Business

MANITOBANS have responded to the threat of tariffs from the U.S. by coming together with a drive to support one another and buy Canadian.

Research demonstrates that how you spend can have a major impact on community impacts and benefits: buying at an independent locally-owned business can have over 100 times the local benefits of buying at an online retailer like Amazon.

The Local Multiplier occurs when you spend your dollars at a locally owned and independent business instead of a chain store or online giant.

A BC Study by Vancity, Offsetters and Civic Economics found that buying at a local independent instead of with an online giant like Amazon had 107 times the community benefit.

“Local products recirculate much more of their cost back into the local economy than imported products. Local businesses selling the products produce a local economic benefit between 1.8 and 4.3 times that of their multinational brick and mortar competitors, an average of 3.1 times. They do this by keeping a much larger percentage of their revenue share of payroll, profits, purchasing, and philanthropic giving within the B.C. economy than their multinational competitors.

When comparing a local retailer to a non-local retailer that is purely online, the benefit of the local business jumps to 107

TIMES, since the only revenue recirculating locally for the online business is the “last kilometer” delivery to the consumer’s door.”

It’s not just British Columbia. Meta-studies across many North American communities show

“Your dollars recirculate through your local economy two to four times more than money spent at a non-local company. As your dollars move through your community, the money generates more local wealth, charitable contributions, and jobs.

On average, 52.9 per cent of each purchase at local independent businesses is recirculated locally, compared to less than 13.6 per cent of purchases at chain stores.”

“Made in Canada”

Requirements:

At Least 51% Canadian

The “Made in Canada” label is not just a marker of pride but a regulated claim. It implies that at least 51 per cent of the total manufacturing costs were incurred in Canada, and the last substantial transformation of the product occurred within the country.

“Product of Canada”

Requirements : 98% Canadian

On the other hand, the “Product of Canada” label holds a stricter criterion. It indicates that 98 per cent of the total production costs and inputs are Canadian. This label is highly sought after, as it assures consumers that almost all components of the product are local.

The Manitoba Government has created a website with buy local resources.

In addition to Manitoba brick-and-mortar businesses, remember that they are also online. Online local independent businesses need your support as well.
