Before you start reading this article, rest assured, you will get to pet a dog.
The Winnipeg Humane Society (WHS) is offering up the chance to go behind the scenes of Manitoba’s oldest animal welfare organization to not only learn about how it helps the dogs, cats and critters it cares for, but what the community can do to increase the well-being of all animals.
The WHS adheres to the Indigenous concept of “One Health,” the belief that animals, people and the environment are all interconnected. When we increase the well-being of one, we increase the well-being of the others.
While most people think of the WHS as simply a shelter, the organization actually supports both ends of the leash. As a social service, the WHS offers programming that addresses food scarcity, homelessness and mental health to increase the well being of animals and the people who love them. That includes a pet food bank, low-cost vet care and free emergency boarding. There’s even a SafePet program for individuals leaving domestic abuse situations, which is designed to keep pets where they belong, with their loving owner.
The new Corporate Team Experiences, facilitated by the WHS Community Outreach team, include a mix of education on the animal-human
connection, behind-the-scenes access and meaningful group activities for animal enrichment or beautifying our outside space for dog walkers, volunteers and new meet-and-greets.
Packages range from half-days to full days (the latter includes lunch), supporting 15 to 30 people and can include the add-on of a WHS therapy dog (or two).
And while you’re getting in those scratches behind the ears, you’re also giving back. Program fees from Corporate Team Experiences help to
support the animals in WHS’s care.
